Fleet
Virgin Atlantic operates an all-widebody, twin-engine fleet comprising Airbus A330-300s, A330-900neos, A350-1000s, and Boeing 787-9s. The airline is actively transitioning to a next-generation fleet, aiming for 100% next-generation aircraft by 2027. This modernization includes retiring older A330-300s and replacing them with more fuel-efficient A330-900neos.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Virgin Atlantic has reduced its absolute carbon emissions from 4.75 million metric tons to just over 3 million metric tons in 2022, a 35% improvement. The airline’s carbon efficiency (CO₂ per available seat kilometre) has improved by 20% over the last decade. By 2026, Virgin Atlantic aims to achieve a 15% gross reduction in carbon emissions per revenue tonne kilometre through its fleet program.
In addition to fleet upgrades, Virgin Atlantic is investing in operational efficiencies, such as optimizing flight paths and reducing aircraft weight, to further decrease fuel consumption and emissions. The airline is also exploring the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to support its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
